The Playbook
I authored TransferRoom's first product design handbook, creating standards the whole team could design by. Read the handbook below.
Mission
To impact and facilitate every transfer in the world of football and professional sports.
Who is this handbook for?
We’re shaping the future of football.
This handbook captures how we think, design, and build at TransferRoom.
It exists to align everyone across the Product & Design organisation; designers, analysts, PMs, engineers, researchers, and beyond.
Whether you’re crafting strategy or shipping code, we share one mission:
To build tools that transform how professional sport does business.
These principles guide how we make decisions, solve problems, and hold each other to a higher standard; so we move faster, smarter, and together.
Our Story
Whether you’re a season ticket holder braving the rain, or sat in a pub with a game on in the background, we serve the most popular sport in the world.
Peoples’ eyes light up when I tell them I work in football, and whether you’re a fan or not, we’re serving not just hundreds of clubs but 4 billion fans worldwide.
You only need to pick up a newspaper or browse the web to see how transfer activity dominates conversation globally, for many becoming more important than the matches themselves.
That’s where we come in.
We have a rare and exciting opportunity to shape the next generation of transfer deals.
Every time a transfer appears on Sky Sports News, or a signing holds up their new shirt, we should know TransferRoom played a role.
Product Vision
We’re building the operating system for professional football transfers; an always-on network that connects clubs, agents, and data in real-time.
We deliver tools that are:
Network-driven: connections that open doors Trusted: secure, safe and reliable Timely: insights immediately available Informative: data that can’t be found anywhere else Inclusive: intuitive, globally understood, and universally accessible
Play the long game
Professional football is a tight and finite community with few second chances. Our customers are irreplaceable. Trust is hard to win, and even harder to regain. We build for long-term value, loyalty, and care in every solution we design.
We're building a product that serves a sport created over 150 years ago. We aim to be at the heart of it for the next 150.
Trust
We earn the trust of our customers by holding financial and sensitive information with care. In the world’s most popular sport, data is a competitive advantage.
Our product is not just built to protect that data, it’s designed to make users feel secure. Every detail should reflect the same care and professionalism we apply behind the scenes.
There is a desire for more trust in the professional game. TransferRoom provides a secure space to bring parties to the table with verified profiles, data, mandates, transactions and more.
Our customers benefit most when the network we offer is strongest, therefore we continue to nurture those relationships within the platform.
Some people want to share more data than other people do - ask them.
Empathy
Customer needs are equal to business needs. We solve problems that provide value to both the business and our customers at the same time.
We design by listening - through research, observation and honest conversations.
Asking correctly framed questions uncovers unmet pains, needs and desires.
We observe our users using our products and services, to understand usability.
We ask, "How do we want users to feel?" and build towards that.
Quantitive research allows us to discover and understand the size of a problem. This is balanced with qualitative research, which brings story and psychology to the table, giving the why.
We learn from our users as experts in their own field, and remain humble about what we don't know.
We possess technical expertise, a thriving marketplace and some understanding of football. Our customers are world leading experts, who are motivated to evolve to stay ahead of the competition. Therefore we must continue to learn from them in an ever-changing space.
Teamwork and community
We serve world class teams, and so we must be one ourselves.
We create a culture of collaboration where different experiences, backgrounds and perspectives come together to make something magical and meaningful.
We show dignity, respect, and opportunity for everyone.
Our customers benefit from the community and connections we facilitate. We reflect this strength internally with a collaborative, albeit distributed, workforce.
We bring empathy to our colleagues, whether that be a clearly set out meeting, a well written email, presentation or beyond, we consider the audience in mind.
We're imperfect as humans in retaining information, so we show humility to refresh the knowledge we already possess, as well as looking to learn and grow every day.
Focus
In order to do our best work, we must pause initiatives that don't align with our current business and customer goals, and focus on those that do.
We prioritise projects that focus on customer and business goals.
We question the question. It is important to ensure the problem we are solving is the correct one.
We keep in mind our goals for sprints, quarters and year to year whenever we plan or do our work.
We document business outcomes we're targeting, before we design a solution.
Deciding what to prioritise starts with clearly defined goals. For every initiative, we ask: How does this contribute to our mission? What measurable outcomes will it drive?
High standards
We design intuitive products, that feel complete.
We constantly test our product; personally, with our colleagues, and with our customers.
Design isn’t just about how something looks, it’s about the signals we send. Sloppy visuals suggest sloppy thinking. But polish, clarity, and intention earn trust before a single click.
Customers should be impressed, not stressed. We absorb the inconvenience of creating the correct solution, so our customers benefit from convenience every time they use our product.
Can do attitude: We focus on the approaches we can take to achieve what we've set out to do.
Design isn’t just how something looks, it’s how it fundamentally works.
Speed
We learn and iterate at speed.
When we "Fail" we "Fix Fast". We accept we won't get everything right all the time, but we take ownership and fix it quickly.
If a meeting or process isn't helping us move faster overall, we remove it.
Show the work
We prototype the ideas we have.
We approach our ideas from all angles, to find the optimal solution.
We visualise and externalise our thinking.
We draw our ideas.
We map out flows.
We document experiments and key decisions.
We build repositories of research to call back to.
We use TLDRs to summarise the key takeaways.
Outcomes over outputs
Every initiative must have a clear business and customer outcome in mind.
Outcomes must be measurable and evidenced at the start.
After launch, we track metrics to see if we reached our desired outcome.
We are building a complex product. Not everything we build will be successful.
Failing to achieve our outcome is okay. It simply signals the need to move on to the next solution.
